The real problems/challenges in using braille with ornamentation are
- The fact that braille is either from left to right or from right to left, and it is hard to create any rotation in it without risking the character (character C for example may start feeling like Z.not a correct example but the risk factor is correct).I may be able to create long waves by adding some wedge like space between cells, but that is the limit of how we may change line shape. The only exception would be if we apply lets say a braille line in circular way over something that is not stable, but movable like a platter, or some sculptural form which may rotator the reader can move along the line.vision is broad when it comes to making meaning, but till date I think touch is linear and sequential; very directional, as narrow as a fingertip
- continuing from point above, vision is 360 degree, touch is a small spot light in total dark.one can create. wholesome rich tactile experience, but the protruded surfaces, be it liner writing or protruded shapes, wont make sense in little time.It will take much longer to make meaning of it compared to vision.
- till now, i have found following ways of embedding braille into/alongside visual surface ornamentation. These ways will also be explorable to some extent if some ornamentation is taken into tactile realm, but we will see what new set of problems come with it
- choose/create ornamentation design in which braille and visual ornamentation are dealt in separate spatial forms, either weaved into each other, or have some other system of connectivity,OR NOT..this means that person with vision sees both, but blind feels only braille sections
- have braille all over the piece as required, and have it covered totally with dense rich ornamentation, concealing braille. This means that both blind and person with vision sense two wholesome pieces.
- create islimi or other designs with woven in sections of braille and visual ornament,BUT embed some protruded liner segments in visual simile line so that blind also feels the flow of line and ornamental motifs along with braille text, while feeling the flow. This means a wholesome islimi feel for both.
- create a complete design using braille AND fine embossed lines which is tactile, and paint on all of it and make all of it visible as well
